Our Hidden Treasures is a new TVNZ documentary series exploring the taonga and objects held in homes and communities across New Zealand. Through the stories behind these items, the series uncovers moments that reflect who we are, where we come from, and the experiences that connect us as a nation

Please use the form below to share taonga from your life, home, whānau, or community that hold personal meaning and speak to a wider story about New Zeland, for potential inclusion in the series.

We know sharing taonga and stories can come with questions. Below are some answers to help guide you through the submission process and what to expect.

What kinds of item's are you looking for?

We’re looking for everyday objects with extraordinary stories - taonga that hold personal meaning and also connect to a wider story about Aotearoa. This could include items linked to significant moments, movements, places, or periods of time in New Zealand’s history.

Can I submit more than one item?

Yes. If you have more than one taonga you’d like to share, you’re welcome to submit multiple entries.

Is there a deadline?

Submissions are open for a limited time. We recommend submitting as soon as you’re ready.

Does submitting mean I’ll be on the TV series?

Not automatically. Submitting an item doesn’t guarantee inclusion, but you may be invited to take part in the television series if your item is selected. If that happens, we’ll contact you directly with full information.

Anything else I should know?

If you’re unsure whether your item is “important enough”, we encourage you to submit anyway. Often it’s the quiet, personal stories that reveal the most about who we are as a nation.

FAQ's

Does the item need to be Māori?

No. Items can come from any background or community. We’re interested in stories that reflect the many cultures, experiences, and histories that shape New Zealand.

Does the item need to be old?

Not at all. Some of the most powerful stories come from the last 100 years or even more recently. What matters is impact, not age.

Do I need to own the item?

Ideally, but not necessary if you have a close personal or whānau connection to it. We’re most interested in items where there is direct lived connection, rather than academic or second-hand knowledge.

What happens after I submit my item?

Our team will review all submissions. If your item feels like a strong fit, we’ll be in touch to learn more and explain the next steps.

Will my information be kept confidential?

Yes. Any information you share will be treated respectfully and used only for the purposes of considering your submission.
